How To Stop Land-shark Attacks

You will quickly realize those big puppy dog eyes are a defense mechanism. Usually you would be upset if tiny razor sharp teeth pierced through your skin, but one look at that adorable, innocent face and the (majority of) ill feelings melt away. Puppies are called land sharks for good reason. The world is new to them, and they explore it through their mouths. Therefore, it's not uncommon for pups to be mouthy -- but it's an important habit to break, and one all pet parents will agree needs to be done sooner rather than later.

TIPS AND TRICKS

1) A lot of patience will get you through this. Make this your new mantra.

2) Never use the crate as punishment or a "cool down" spot. If you need a barrier between you and the puppy, a play or exercise pen, baby gate, or standing on the opposite side of a closed door are all suitable alternatives. The crate should not be an option though, because the goal of crate training is to associate it with pleasant things.

3) Never allow your pup to nibble you, not even gently. Make a "nauh" noise and put a toy in your pup's mouth the moment he tries to put his mouth on you. Consistency is important here. 4) Offer a lot of positive reinforcement (e.g.: praise, rub down, treat, special game) when your pup is chewing on something he is supposed to.

5) If your pup begins to get rough while playing, immediately stop the game and ignore him until he's calm again. Again, consistency is important here. You may need to stop and restart the game multiple times before your pup realizes the consequence of biting is playtime ending.

6) If the above doesn't work, you can try making a high pitched yelping noise to show you're in pain. Some have found their pups become remorseful afterwards, and the behavior stops. 7) Apply a "no bite" solution to your hands. Homemade, all natural recipes can be found here.
