One might reasonably assume I have a dog after looking at my supplies collection, but in reality I am (very, very sadly) puppy-less.
That being said, I have been slowly preparing for my future
French Bulldog--lovingly named Fry--for just about a year now. The only thing between Fry and I is the fact that I don't live in pet-friendly housing, but I'll be fully prepared to welcome him into my life the moment those circumstances change.
I suggest preparing for a puppy far in advance for two reasons. The first is the peace of mind that results from having everything in order. No one wants to be scrambling to check things off of the "GET DONE FOR PUPPY" list last minute. Being prepared in advance lifts a weight off the shoulders, and makes the transition easier for dog and human alike.
The second reason is financial; having time is truly a luxury when it comes to money. Take me for example... I'm able to wait for the best of sales and promotions, and therefore I haven't paid full price for a single item!
Bonus reason: If you're planning to purchase from a breeder rather than adopting, you want plenty of time to find a breeder who fits your values. It's also a fantastic opportunity to build a relationship with the breeder before the puppy is born.
